Significance of Ganga Saptami

A bath in the Ganga on this day is said to wash away the sins of seven births. For those unable to reach the river, taking a bath at home with a few drops of Ganga jal mixed in regular water is considered equivalent. The day is especially powerful for Pitru Tarpan (offerings to ancestors) and Pind Daan.

History & Mythology of Ganga Saptami

Ganga Saptami — also called Ganga Jayanti — falls on the Saptami tithi of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha. Mythology says this is the day Bhagiratha's penance succeeded and Ma Ganga re-emerged from the matted locks of Lord Shiva, who had caught her descent to spare the earth from her force. While Ganga Dussehra (Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami) marks her actual descent to earth, Ganga Saptami marks her release from Shiva's tresses — both are considered her birth-anniversaries.

What is the difference between Ganga Saptami and Ganga Dussehra?

Ganga Saptami marks Ma Ganga's release from Lord Shiva's matted locks (Vaishakha Shukla Saptami). Ganga Dussehra marks her descent to earth (Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami). Both are sacred but Ganga Dussehra carries the heavier observance of taking a Dashami snan with ten dips.
