What is Panchang?

Panchang is the ancient Hindu almanac based on five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (sun-moon combination), and Karana (half-tithi). RashifalJi's Panchang calculator uses Vedic astronomical calculations with Lahiri ayanamsa — the same method traditional pandits use.

Each Panchang is generated for your city's sunrise, so tithi, Rahu Kaal and muhurta timings are accurate to your location — not a generic country-wide value.

The Five Limbs of Panchang

🌞

Vara

The weekday, ruled by one of the seven planets. Sets the dominant energy of the day.

🌙

Tithi

The lunar day — based on the angle between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month.

Nakshatra

The lunar mansion — one of 27 fixed star groups the Moon is currently passing through.

🔱

Yoga

Sun + Moon combined longitude divided into 27 yogas. Each carries an auspicious or inauspicious flavour.

Karana

Half a tithi — there are 11 karanas. Used for muhurta selection and judging the activity of the moment.

How to Use the Panchang

🟢 Check auspicious windows

Start new ventures, travel, or investments during Abhijit Muhurta, Brahma Muhurta, or auspicious Choghadiya slots (Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char).

🔴 Avoid Rahu Kaal

Don't start important decisions, purchases, or new tasks during Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal, or Yamghant Kaal — these are the daily inauspicious windows.

🕐 Use the right Hora

Pick a Mercury or Jupiter Hora for finance work, Moon Hora for travel and emotional matters, and Sun Hora for health and authority interactions.

🌕 Tithi & Paksha

Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon) favours new beginnings, weddings, and growth. Krishna Paksha (waning Moon) is best for releasing old patterns, ancestor rituals, and inner sadhana.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do tithi and Rahu Kaal change with city?

Both depend on local sunrise. Sunrise in Mumbai and Kolkata can differ by over 90 minutes, which shifts the entire day's tithi boundaries and Rahu Kaal window. Always pick your actual city for accurate results.

What is Choghadiya and how do I read it?

Choghadiya splits day and night into 8 equal slots each. Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char are auspicious — best for new work. Rog, Kaal and Udveg are inauspicious. The exact timing depends on your city's sunrise and sunset.

What is Abhijit Muhurta?

Abhijit Muhurta is the most auspicious 48-minute window of the day, falling around local solar noon. It is considered universally favourable — most starting ceremonies, journeys and important meetings can be aligned to it.

What is Vikram Samvat vs Shaka Year?

Both are traditional Hindu calendar years. Vikram Samvat is 57 years ahead of the Gregorian year (used widely in North India and Nepal). Shaka Saka is 78 years behind Gregorian and is used in the Indian national calendar.

How accurate are these calculations?

All values are computed in real time using the Astronomy Engine library with Lahiri Ayanamsa — the standard sidereal correction used in Vedic Jyotish. Results match traditional panchang publications to within seconds.
