What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a 90-minute window each day when the shadow planet Rahu's influence is at its strongest. According to Vedic tradition, this period is considered inauspicious for starting anything important — new ventures, travel, puja, investments, or major decisions.

The calculation is simple: divide the time from sunrise to sunset into 8 equal parts. Each weekday has a fixed slot assigned to Rahu (Monday = 2nd slot, Tuesday = 7th slot, and so on). Because sunrise and sunset shift with location and season, Rahu Kaal varies by city and by day.

Important note: Rahu Kaal doesn't mean something bad will happen in those 90 minutes. The tradition simply advises that major beginnings be timed outside this window. Routine work — meetings, meals, study, travel you've already started — is unaffected.

Why Timing Matters in Vedic Practice

Vedic astrology holds that every moment is influenced by a specific planetary energy — this is the foundation of the concepts of Shubh Muhurat (auspicious timing) and inauspicious periods. Besides Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal and Yamghant Kaal are the other two daily periods to avoid. On the opposite end, Abhijit Muhurta (around solar noon) and Brahma Muhurta (4–6 am) are considered the most auspicious windows for any beginning — from starting a new job to beginning a puja.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rahu Kaal stronger on any particular day?

The duration is the same on all days (~90 minutes) — just at different times. Traditionally, Tuesday's and Saturday's Rahu Kaal are considered slightly more sensitive because of their planetary rulers (Mars and Saturn).

Should I stop travelling during Rahu Kaal?

The rule is — don't start a new journey during Rahu Kaal. A journey already in progress isn't affected. Daily commuting (school, office) doesn't fall under this restriction.

Can I do puja during Rahu Kaal?

Yes. In fact, doing Rahu Shanti puja, homa, or chanting Rahu mantras during Rahu Kaal itself is considered highly effective. Only new worldly undertakings should be avoided.

Does online shopping count?

Small routine purchases are not restricted. For major purchases — a vehicle, property, expensive electronics — traditional advice is to choose a Shubh Muhurat instead.
